Let’s Talk About the Power of Black Self-Love
by Mwangaza Michael-Bandele, PhD
Let’s Talk About the Power of Black Self-Love and How to Add More To Your Everyday Life.
There is a question that has echoed in the corners of our community for generations, though we rarely stop to ask it aloud: How often do we actually talk about Black self-love?
We talk about success. We talk about hustle. We talk about surviving, grinding, and overcoming. We talk about making a way out of no way. But conversations about the internal engine of self-regard that makes it possible to build a life of purpose rather than simply living by default—are remarkably rare.
And that silence costs us.
So, let's break that silence and explore what Black self-love really means. Let's be reminded why it is essential for every single person who identifies as Black, and how reconnecting with truths about a great history, culture, and ancestry can transform the way people of African descent walk through the world.
The Universal Need for Self-Love
Let us begin with a foundational truth: self-love is not a concept reserved for any one group of people. It is not a luxury or a trend. It is fundamental to healthy human development and well-being.
Why? Because self-regard—as in your assessment of your worth, reflected in the degree to which you practice self-respect—largely influences the quality of your life. Self-regard drives the internal thoughts and choices you make, the relationships you accept, the risks you take, and the dreams you allow yourself to pursue.
When you have a healthy sense of self-value, self-regard, and genuine love for who you are, you are less inclined to drift through life simply reacting to circumstances. You stand in your own power and produce outcomes that align with your deepest values and desires. You are poised to become an active participant in your existence, crafting the life you truly want rather than settling for whatever happens to come your way.
But here is where we pause and ask ourselves an honest question: If self-love is so fundamental to human thriving, why isn't it discussed more often? How many classes have you taken on the topic? How many conversations have you had about the mechanics of healthy self-regard? When was the last time you read a book, attended a lecture, or enrolled in a self-love DIY workshop?
For people who identify as Black, the question becomes even more pointed: How often is Black self-love examined, explored, evaluated or otherwise illuminated? Truth is, the topic is not considered very often. Given its ability to improve self-worth, Black self-love is not discussed often, deeply, or consistently enough. And yet, it illuminates a direct pathway to Black individual and collective empowerment.
The Unique Landscape of Black Self-Love
While the core need for self-regard is universal, the context in which Black people must consider their worth is remarkably unique. Because we live in a world where Black folks have been devalued, demeaned, and demonized for centuries, the truth of Black beauty, power, and genius has been thwarted. Through systemic practices activated by institutional policies and other mechanisms like media and education, racist messaging has caused people to think less about Black people. Most importantly, Black folks around the world—no matter the country, language, or culture of origin—have been conditioned to think less of themselves and not love being Black. The toxic engineering of anti-Black messaging left little to love. As a result, the process of Black folks cultivating self-love requires more. It requires remembering and reclaiming Black historic and present-day greatness.
This is why Black self-love deserves its own conversation. Not because we develop differently, but because the path to loving ourselves often requires us to navigate self-incriminating obstacles that others do not face. It requires us to unlearn racist messages that were never true. It requires us to fill in the gaps and detoxify a history that was never fully revealed.
The Transformational Vault of Black Achievement
So where do we begin? How do we build or deepen our experience of Black self-love?
One of the most powerful places to start is with what might be called a Black self-love transformational vault. Inside this vault are the truths about Black achievement, Black resilience, and Black greatness that have accumulated over millennia. These are the stories—TRUE stories—that remind us of how great people of African descent have historically been and how our brilliance has and continues to illuminate the world.
Think for a moment about what it means to descend from greatness. Not just individual greatness, but collective, historic, long legacy greatness. People of African descent are the world's first human beings. Our ancestors built civilizations while much of the world was still figuring out how to organize itself. We come from mathematicians who understood the configuration of stars, architects who built ancient structures that still stand, healers who understood the wisdom of the body, and leaders who governed with vision on behalf of collective well-being.
These are not just feel-good facts to pull out during Black History Month. These are truths that have the power to reshape how we see and regard ourselves—now. When you know that your foreparents achieved the impossible, survived the unthinkable, and sometimes thrived under conditions designed to break them—self-respect and regard inevitably grows.
Black self-love germinating from the inside out, is a reminder that your capacity for greatness is not something you have to acquire from external sources. Capacity is something you already possess.
When you are open to these truths, you can begin to see and grow yourself as a source of expanded possibilities. For example, in the face of challenges—while looking through the lens of Black self-love—you may find yourself fortified by memories of what your ancestors successfully overcame. With their examples, you are provided an internal source of momentum and reassurance that because they successfully met challenges, you likely can too.
The Slow Motion Run Into Your Own Arms
There is a beautiful image that captures what this kind of Black self-love feels like. Imagine running in slow motion—through a beautiful meadow of flowers—toward someone you love deeply, that you have missed, and whose worth you completely recognize. Now—imagine that someone is you.
That scenario describes the feeling of what it's like to experience Black self-love. Imagine the experience of opening your heart to the wonder that you are, seeing yourself not through the distorted lens of false inferiority, but through the error-free lens of truth. It means recognizing that you are the best of who you know yourself to be—and so much more.
Not arrogantly, just accurately—as a human being of infinite value who is capable of shaping your own life and contributing to the world in ways that only you can.
When you have this kind of self-love, you do not need constant validation from outside. You do not shrink to make others comfortable. You do not abandon yourself in order to fit into spaces that were not designed for you. You stand firm in your worth, and from that standing place, you make decisions that honor who you are.
The Gap Between Knowing and Living
Knowing these truths intellectually is one thing. Living from them consistently is another.
Most of us have heard at some point that Black history is rich and glorious. Most of us know, in a general way, that our African ancestors were resilient and accomplished. Often, that knowledge can remain in our heads without making the journey to our hearts. It remains abstract rather than personal. It remains historical rather than present-day and alive.
The gap between knowing and living is where so many of us get stuck. We know we should love ourselves, but we don't always feel it. We know we are worthy, but we don't always act like it. We know we descend from greatness, but we don't always manifest that greatness in our daily lives.
This is why intentionally cultivating Black self-love is so essential. It is not enough to simply have information. We need to take actions that move Black affirming truths from our minds into routine practices that honor our bodies, guide our choices, safeguard our relationships, and anchor our sense of identity.
We need to experience information in ways that sustain a Black self-loving mindset, without qualification or apology. And we need to gather as community to talk about these needs openly and deeply.
Why This Conversation Matters Right Now
In a world that moves fast and demands constant output, inner-work can be easily neglected. Focusing on external achievements while ignoring the internal foundation that makes those achievements sustainable and meaningful can easily occur. Truth is, without self-love, even the greatest accomplishments can feel hollow. Without self-worth, even the most impressive resume cannot fill the void. Without Black self-love, critical aspects of who you are can be disregarded.
For people who identify as Black, the stakes are high because we are navigating global systems that were not built with our well-being in mind. We are raising children in a world that often ignores their brilliance and dims their possibilities through a conditioning that convinces them that they are not enough. Truth is, if we do not build Black self-love in ourselves, we are less likely to model it for the next generation.
This is the work that makes all other work possible.
